Seasonal Allergies: Reduce Your Exposure
For many, spring signifies warmer weather, flower buds and blooming trees. However, for many others it also means seasonal allergies, and the on-set of symptoms such as sneezing, congestion, and runny nose. Seasonal allergies can cause people to feel miserable, and although no one can prevent the release of allergens into the environment, there are simple strategies that can help reduce exposure. The following recommendations help minimize exposure to allergens, which in turn, may help reduce the impact of seasonal allergies.
Reduce your exposure to the things that trigger allergy signs and symptoms:
- Stay indoors on dry, windy days.
- Remove clothing worn outside.
- Rinse the body, including hair, after returning inside to remove any pollen.
- Wear a pollen mask when doing outdoor work such as mowing the yard or planning flowers.
Take extra steps when pollen counts are high to reduce exposure:
- Check local media outlets for pollen forecasts as well as current pollen levels
- Minimize outdoor activity when pollen levels are high.
- Close doors and windows when pollen counts are high.
- Avoid outdoor activity in the early morning when pollen counts are highest.
Keep indoor air as clean as possible.
- Use air conditioning in the house and car.
- Use high-efficiency filters and follow regular maintenance schedules when using forced air heating or air conditioning
- Use a dehumidifier to keep indoor air dry.
- Use a portable HEPA filter in the bedroom.
- Clean floors frequently with a HEPA filter vacuum cleaner.
By reducing exposure to allergy symptom triggers, paying attention to high pollen times, and keeping indoor air clean exposure to allergens can be minimized. This may allow allergy sufferers the opportunity to enjoy the brighter days and spring temperatures, not be hindered by sneezing and watery eyes.
