Holiday Safety Tips

As you decorate your home or office for the holiday, there are important safety tips to keep in mind. According to the National Fire Protection Association, holiday lighting is linked to approximately 160 home structure fires each year. To reduce your risk of property damage, injury or death, consider these holiday lighting safety tips from the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI):

  • Use LEDs instead of incandescent bulbs – they stay cool to the touch, are more durable, and are more energy efficient
  • Use a wooden or fiberglass ladder when hanging lights outdoors
  • Turn off all indoor and outdoor holiday lighting before you go to bed and before you leave the house
  • Consider battery operated candles in place of traditional candles
  • If using traditional candles, never leave them unattended and keep them away from trees or other combustible materials
  • If purchasing a live tree, choose one that is fresh to reduce fire hazard
  • To ensure water absorption and keep live trees fresh longer, cut 1-2” from the base of the trunk immediately before placing it in the stand and filling with water and refill daily
  • If purchasing an artificial tree, look for a label that reads “Fire Resistant”
  • Your tree should be kept at least 3 feet away from all heat sources
