National Preparedness Month & Get Ready Day (9/18)

Do you know what to do in case of a fire, flood, or tornado? Does your family have a plan? September is National Preparedness month and September 18th is National Get Ready Day. In response to National Get Ready Day, sponsored by the American Public Health Association (APHA), consider taking some time to talk with your family or household about what to do in the event of an emergency.  The Department of Homeland Security recommends discussing the following questions to begin developing your emergency plan:

  1. How will I receive emergency alerts and warnings?
  2. What is my shelter plan?
  3. What is my evacuation route?
  4. What is my family/household communication plan?

Whether disaster strikes while at home or work, have a plan. Make sure you know where your department meets in the event of a tornado or fire. APHA provides fact sheets on what to do before, during and after emergency situations such as wildfires, tornadoes, and floods.
